Hi,

We are moving to Chicago and looking for a house in Huntley or Crystal Lake. We have a child in 7th grade and one in 4th. Is the school system better in Huntley or Crystal Lake. (Our daughter sings and does Musical Theater, so we are hoping to find a middle school with a good theater program.)

Thanks! Staci

I think the CL schools are rated better overall. Not sure of the middle schoo theater programs, but consider participating in CYT. It's a theater program for kids ages 8-18. They have weekely classes and put on full length production shows numerous times per year. If you are in the Huntley/Crystal Lake area, you can choose between CYT Mchenry Country or CYT Kane county, or go between the two depending on which show you want to audition for. My girls love the program. You can check it out at cytchicago.org, and PM me if you have any specific questions about CYT or the Crystal Lake area.the area.

There are several threads on the Crystal Lake schools in the past year.

In general, most people in this area prefer the Crystal Lake schools. Now all agreement ceases when you ask the people which of the three high schools is the best as they all have their supporters.

Huntley schools are probably fine BUT they suffer from the perception (accurate or not) that the presence of the Del Webb community in Huntley make it unlikely that the schools would be adequately funded.

There are plenty of theatre groups in this region.

Default The data is all ocher the map...

I have a coworker that lives in an unincorporated section of Huntley, even he, who like most parents is mostly happy with his kids current schools, admits that the data is very confusing. Like most parts of McHenry Co there has been a lot of growth and change. Some of that is good, with more tax revenues / new schools, but some has resulted in more folks moving more frequently than is good for their kids. This more evident in the sections of Crystal Lake with lots of apartments...

I would check out the Illinois Interactive Report Card as a starting point, but since things are much more in flux than in more established areas I would follow up with visits to the schools and even cruise the attendance areas to scout out the overall housing stock.

Btw neither Huntley nor Crystal Lake are particularly close to employment centers in the region. Depending on your budget you could do a lot better, especially with so many distressed sales hurting values even inn highly desirable areas.
