We have kids who are in a private Lutheran school. We are possibly moving to Chicago and trying to learn all that we can about it. We would really prefer to keep our kids in a parochial school. Do you have any good ones anyone can recommend? We still haven't zeroed in on a suburb either, so we thought we would look at this angle too.

I toured St Peter Lutheran School in Schaumburg and was planning on enrolling my kids there, but didn't due to financial circumstances. The academics were better than the public schools, and I liked the relaxed and friendly atmosphere for a parochial school No uniforms are required (maybe 7th and 8th grade, but I'm not sure), and the principal seemed to know everyone by name. They also deal with discipline problems swiftly.

St Paul's in Brookfield is also supposed to be good, but I don't know much about it. They do, however, use Saxon Math.

You can search some of the private school info on illinoisloop.org

I would love a school that uses saxon math. We can't stand that all the public schools in WI use Everyday Math - it stinks! Our private school right now uses saxon and singapore.

That was one of the main reasons I was planning on switching. St Peter uses Harcourt Math 2002, not fuzzy math. Just about every school in the Chicagoland area uses Everyday Math or some form of fuzzy math.

I resorted to using Saxon 5/4 for homeschool and Mammoth Math at home for my son to supplement his school math.

Default It would be helpful for more info on WHERE in the region you may be looking...

If I suggest Timothy Christian (in south Elmhurst) and you are looking at a job in Gurnee that won't be very useful...

In general the vast majority of non- public schools in the region are part of Catholoc parishes. Although catechism is generally a non- optional part of the deal I know several families that have still chosen the Catholoc school as a better fit for their family despite being of other faith backgrounds. Even backgrounds as diverse as Sikhs and Buddists have found the overall environment to their liking...

St. Paul's church/school in Mount Prospect. I've heard nothing but rave reviews from parents who have transferred their children from the public school district (which is already top performing) to St. Paul's. They have a great variety of extracurricular activities like band and Lego Robotics and the teachers are fabulous. Plus, Mt. Prospect is a great place to live, in general, with proximity to Metra, OHare, and reasonable housing prices. And, Prospect High School (if you decide to move to public school at that point) is a top rated, nationally-recognized school.

I like St Johns in Libertyville, but I am a bit biased as one of mine went there.

In the Chicago area there seems to be three schools of thought - and I use this word lightly. Wisconsin Synod, Missouri Synod, and Independent Lutheran. Some that I found are Pre K to 4, Pre-K to 8. I did not find a Pre-K through 12 school.

I found three churches in the Wi Synod: Lake Zurich, 9900 S. in Chicago and Beloit, Wi. There are several Missouri Synod churches through the City of Chicago and Cook County. Time, distance and location are the biggest factors in Chicago daily travel. It usually boils down to farther travel to school, or farther travel to work. Finding a happy medium is a challenge especially since not all of the schools or churches have a website. .

In Downers Grove, Good Shepherd, PreK-8 has a great reputation. I checked them out and they have recently earned an exemplary accreditation from the NCPSA (National Council for Private School Accreditation). They have a low student to teacher ratio and utilize chromebooks and smartboards among other technology in classrooms. The teachers are very caring and they teach about God daily....their number is 630-852-5081 and the principal will set up a tour when called. Good Luck!
