You picked an old thread to post in which is why you did not get a reply. When Cook County and Chicago acreage and population are combined you see nearly 9M living in working in 1000 square miles. Elk Grove is somewhere in there among a hundred other villages that look just like it.

The Midwest is 13 states most of which contain "rust belt" cities, and hundreds of isolated areas of small towns, farms separated by, fence and cross-fence, county roads, railroad tracks, and dirt roads.

My father had the same kind of job as yours. His employer was in Chicago, but he worked between OH, IL, IN, NE MO, and SW WI, and went to Chicago for the annual industry convention, business meeting.

Because of where the areas where he worked were not near Cook County or the Chicago area, we did not live in or near Chicago. We lived in the Peoria - Bloomington area. Geographically the area is a mix of cliff, prairie, rolling hills, mixed with rivers and lakes. It is a metro area of approximately 500000 spread over nine counties.

Regardless of one's definition of 'rust belt. overall the cities of Peoria, Normal, Bloomington, Urbana, Springfield and Champaign were less affected by the de-industialization in Illinois. Of these cities four are dominated by large universities, two are emerging medical districts with multiple hospitals, one is the state government, and the other is a STEM and research city. Lots of stuff to do and see.

The link is a year old so there are several communities that are now inaccurate but for the most part I think this link will be of help to you.
https://chicagoagentmagazine.com/cur...status-update/ Through this list I was able to help my mom search for and eventually find a beautiful D.R. Horton home is a nice community in Naperville which is about 2 1/2 hours (as my mom drives) from her brother in Lincoln. Happy hunting!

I'd recommend Logan Square.
