We are new retirees and want a suburb within an hour of Chicago to relocate too. We would like an apartment with no worries etc. Hoping for low crime and cheaper cost of living from our now close suburb which is expensive. Any suggestions?

Basically I think is county taxes are cheaper than city, and other counties are cheaper than living in Cook County. In the Chicago area in no particular order I like Berwyn, Oak Park, Geneva, Skokie and Park Ridge. I have a brother-in-law who lives in Romeoville and loves it; our nephew who lives in Algonquin and has for many years.

When i was in my 20s, 30s. and 40s I could not get enough of the city. Twenty years later I am no longer enchanted with the noise, the traffic or the mass of teeming people, but, I still want the ease of getting there on my schedule. Plus it would be nice if it was easy for my friends and family to visit me.

The only town in Illinois that is mentioned as having the lowest COL in the state is Princeton. It is beautiful, clean, safe and has trains to and from the city every day. If I wanted to move closer to the city and have the best of both worlds I would move to Princeton in a heartbeat. .

I love Princeton too but would never consider it to be "closer to the city". Well, maybe I would - if I lived in Iowa.
