I'm buying a condo in the evanston area and moving there from Canada. I've got a couple of really dumb questions about the prices of certain things since I'm coming from a place where a lot of these costs are subsidized by the government...

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it would cost to:
A) Insure a personal car that we recently bought (2009 vibe, ~20k)
B) Insure a 250k condo (~1100 sq feet)
C) Utilities for 1100 sq feet condo

Thx in advance for your help...

All three of those vary wildly depending on the situation. Especially the utilities and car insurance. Depending on your driving record and value of the car, your insurance could be very inexpensive, or the opposite. With the condo, we don't know if your association dues cover any utilities or if you're completely on your own.

You can go to esurance.com or geico.com and get a super quick quote for car insurance.

But for fun - let's say your association didn't cover utlilties and you had to pay them all on your own. I lived in a 1000 sq ft 2 br/1 br apartment and had to pay all utilities. Between gas, electric, water and trash, I usually paid about $250 a month. Some months were a little lower (like the months I didn't have to use air conditioning OR heat. So, that's just my experience; yours may differ.

A) probably about $900/year depening on your age and insurance levels
B) probably about $750/year as all you will be insuring is your personal belongings
C) Gas and electric is probably about $150/month

these are all guesses, hope that helps!

Assume that I'm a decent driver and only water is covered by the homeowners...

Your car insurance will be higher if you don't have any credit history - are you going to be new to the US? You may also have to put down deposits for some utilities.

A) We have a 2006 Grand Prix GXP and pay about $1500/year for it ... one 'er two tickets on record! For that and our SUV it's $2100/year total.

B) Our condo is about $160/year to insure (inside only as the association covers the outside) for a $25k contents policy

C) Utilities vary widely with the seasons! On average, we pay about $100/month for gas, $100/month for electric and $25/month for water. Of course, some months it's way less and other month's it's way higher!

Hope that helps!
