In the eternal subject of high property taxes in Cook County, how does $9,500 tax sound for a $180k residence? Is it just me or does this sound ridiculous?

Ridiculous and inconsistent.

Are you comfortable sharing the street/neighborhood and type of property.

That is high even for Cook County, but if it is on a large lot (over 1/3 acre) I can understand it.

That sounds a bit high for Lake County, and way out of line for Cook County. Maybe the school district passed a referendum, but this still sounds high.

Default property taxes

Property taxes are out of control, home values go down yet property taxes go up. They are high all over but in my area of Naperville a single family home means your paying 10k plus and thats on the low side.

It's crazy we get taxed on our income, taxes on gas, taxes on investments, taxes on our property and then when we die they take 50% of the money we have already been taxed on a dozen times and steal it instead of letting us give it to our children.

SOmething has to change drastically, people are only going to put up with so much and were quickly reaching that point.

On a side note I don't like paying taxes but at least if the services we recieved made it worthwhile it wouldn't feel so bad, when the money goes to waste corruption and stupid projects its kind of hard to swallow though.

I see errors in the assessment records, all the time. Sometimes they are to the owner's benefit and sometimes, not.

Cook County has a very good online inquiry database available to anyone, at no cost. Lake County charges an annual access fee to access their data base. In person inquiries can be made at the county seat at no cost.

The cost of schools and municipal services does not decline with property values.

Yes, sounds like you should challenge. My residence is worth $500K and my taxes are $7000. I'm in the city though.

Property taxes in IL (at least the Chicago area) are ridiculously out of control. I believe Lake Co was even ranked in the Top 5 for highest property taxes in the nation - could even be #1. My wife and I are having a hard time with that topic right now choosing between IL burbs and NWI. So many pros to living on the IL side, but then you get hit with the big tax bill. The big question, is it worth it? To some, yes, to others, no.
