Im 27 years old and have been looking into moving to Oak Park. I currently work in Naperville and may have the opportunity to work in Hillside soon. I'm looking to stay near 290 if possible. Im looking for a condo that would be within walking distance of an urban town center that holds restaraunts and bars, bike friendly, and is near public transportation to downtown also. My budget is no more than $250k for wherever I chose to move. I spend a lot of time downtown on the weekends and am in the far west burbs for work so looking for a place inbetween the two. Recently I've been attending a lot of open houses in Oak Park near Harlem/Lake and love the area but thinking maybe it's too costly for what I need. Im sure I want a Condo or Townhouse and not a house. The thing with Oak Park that worries me is that the taxes are very high and being that I have no kids and don't plan on having kids anytime soon maybe it's not the best place for someone like myself just yet?

Any and all recommendations would be great. Thanks in advance

I've been looking into Forrest Park also but can't seem to find that nice mix of being a simple bike ride from the CTA and a center filled with Cafes, Bars, and Restaurants. From what I see the Harlem/Lake Green Line is the farthest west I can be and get the mix

What's wrong with a Forest Park condo north of Randolph and east of Circle? You're about two blocks from the Green line and two-three blocks from downtown Oak Park (as well as Madison St in Forest Park.)

Here's a reasonably priced 2 bedroom: http://www.redfin.com/IL/Forest-Park.../home/13323130

There are three units available in this building: http://www.redfin.com/IL/Forest-Park.../home/13324262

Why not actually live in the city. Oak Park seems to be people who would really want to be in the city but have kids so oak park is the compromise. Why not just live in the city and in a few years when you wanna settle down and have kids move to oak park

On the forums the only correct answers are:

-- never live or work anywhere where you can't take the only kind of transit that is run my the almighty CTA even if that means buses that move slower than most dog walkers and electric trains that spend more time on repairs than running...

-- never choose a more desirable , costly suburb when a cheaper more run down area that is not as nice is kinda sorta a little bit if you squint almost similar ...

-- never, ever suggest a place that has a less diverse, more affluent mix of residents over some place that looks like a casting call for "We Are The World" crossed with folks who don't make as much as lazy StreetWise vendor...

-- pretend that long commutes will still allow you to enjoy the fabulous dive bars of hip areas filled with folks that think mutilation == jewelry when even a simple calculation shows you'd get so little sleep it is all but certain you'd be fired for sleeping on the job...
