Our 19 year old son is relocating to Lisle, IL to do an internship, which is located 9 miles away in Oak Brook. (South of Lombard). Will he absolutely need a car, or can he get around with public transportation? I realize that none of the busses operate on Sunday which is fine, and he has no need to go into the city. Just trying to figure out if I absolutely have to come up with a car for him or if this is feasible! Also are the busses free or do they charge? The information I looked at online for PCA and CTA is really confusing! Thanks...

Without knowing the intersection that the internship will be located at and the intersection near where he will be living at, it is almost impossible to give you an answer.

The buses are not free.

The presumption is that public transit will not work for everything. The CTA is Chicago Transit Authority and doesn't really venture out into the further out suburbs. Pace Bus is the suburban transit organization and they have a very limited schedule.

If he cannot walk to grocery stores or shopping from his apartment, it will be quite difficult without a car.

He will be across the street from the grocery store (yay!) - great apartment complex near access to the train as well. He is right by the expressway, the studio that he will be interning is right off of Butterfield, at the intersection of the highway and Butterfield, near a major shopping center.

Check pacebus.com for the schedules and route maps. If he is happy to get cabs as and when needed he will be fine, but he will feel the struggle of not having a car. He may also need to check with the studio he is interning with whether they expect him to have a car.

Be sure to check those route maps and schedules to make sure he will be 100% ok.

If he were in the city I would feel much better with no car. Heck there are places in the city where a car is more hassle than it is worth, but the many burbs do not have much in the way of tranist or the hours are funny(i.e. last bus stoping at 6:50 or other inconvient time). Also make sure he can actually walk to everything he needs becuase the burbs can be lacking in the sidewalk department.

How are Lisle and Oak Brook 9 miles apart? Nevermind - I guess it is. Further than I thought!

He should also consider getting a bicycle to cover the last mile between his home and bus stop and bus stop and office. Pace buses now carry bicycles even in rush hour. If he is athletic enough, nine miles can easily be done in an hour.

Double that distance in an hour, isn't a terribly fast bike pace.
