If you are coming into town during the day you can head I into the City via the Blue line EL trains and easily amuse yourselves for several hours while still have most of $100 left in your pocket. You could head into nearby Park Ridge and maybe see a real movie at the Uptown and get a nice sundae at Oberweiss dairy store. A bit of longer cab ride would take you to Arlington Park where you could take in a thoroughbred race.

If you are coming in at evening time Rosemont has dozens of hotels and restaurants -- you'd probably spend more than $100 but you could go for a swim, have a nice meal, shower and get a little rest in a much more civilized setting than anything the airline provides...

Yes go for a swim or start navigating the L during your five hour layover. Optimally, take the Blue Line into downtown, and switch to the Red Line north to Howard. At Howard take the Purple Line into Wilmette and take a nice stroll towards Winnetka.

It doesn't take that long to go through O'hare security, unless they take you aside for a full cavity search. Seriously though, It has never taken me more than 30 min and more often 15min.

Yeah, OP, go for it, I've changed my mind. Nothing ever goes wrong with the "El", and who needs to leave any time for another run through security. Have fun!

To retrieve and recheck bags for an international arrival/departure? You must not fly to any of the places I do.
