Thanks for clearing that up, Outlander. :-) I'm sorry you haven't had the best experience in meeting other moms with kids. I really do feel it's just the town you live in. Hopefully that link to meetup.com will help you find some groups of stay at home moms near you. Good luck!!

This is a really interesting thread.

I've lived in Chicagoland all my life and I don't always think we're the easiest people to befriend. I read anther post somewhere explaining how more Chicagoans are "lifers" than in other cities and so we're less open to making new friends.

I notice Outlander has a 4-year old. I think this issue eases a lot when your children hit school age, wherever you are. In the mean time, nanannie's advice is pretty good, too. Get out there and get busy.

Maybe we should start a thread on SAHM-friendy neighborhoods/subdivisions?

Default If You Want A Friend, You Have To Be One

I am sure that everyone realizes this. However, being a friend can be easily accomplished by initiating one's own backyard party. Then invite the entire neighborhood area.
There are two types of people in my point of view. People living in a farming community. And city people. First, the city folk are usually interested in 'getting ahead' which creates competitive friction among city neighbors. And also there is the underlying criminal factor.
On the flip side, farming people are usually a very gracious type of person. That's because most farmers are laid back - - not competive with their neighbors - - and they have a really true interest in your friendship.
Also farmers train their kids to respect the family's livestock and not do damage to other people's property.
IF you are trying to be competitive in this cut throat world, then a city is for you. However, if you are more interested in backyard friendship, then move out to the farming communities.
One that immediately comes to mind is Polo, Illinois - - a small / beautiful farming community that contains lonely people who want to become your friends. If you want a friend, then have a backyard barbecue and invite your neighbors. Such a party breaks the 'ice' within several minutes.

'Hope this helps, you.

Best Regards,

Carter Glass

Wow, that's kind of a generalization, don't you think?

Totally disagree, there's good and bad people everywhere, there's lots of friendly people in cities and lots of unfriendly people in the rural areas.

I'll chime in here. Chicago is one of the friendliest big cities in the U.S. And the suburbs even friendlier, many times because they are made up of newcomers to the area looking to connect. I lived in the heart of McHenry County, and it seemed like I was in the middle of Kansas from a friendly standpoint. Then you remember you are just an hour from the loop, and it is simply amazing!
