The "feel" of living on the North Shore is different from that of comparable upscale suburbs in DuPage County and elsewhere in the western suburbs.

The North Shore is far more of an enclave. It's a world apart. It is buffeted by the lake, of course, on the east, and by Edens Expressway and in some parts the Skokie Lagoons to the West. There is no reason to drive into the North Shore unless you're going somewhere since it really doesn't connect you with anyplace else. Thus the major east/west roads (Dempster, Golf, Lake, Willow, Dundee, Lake Cook) virtually their wide, strip mall loaded landscape and continue as more residential streets as they head to the lake.

There is continuous wealth from the central part of the Evanston lakefront all the way up to Lake Bluff (if you blink when you go through Highwood). So a trip up Sheridan Road shows you really are in a world apart.

That isn't the case in places like Hinsdale or Naperville or Oak Brook where the major streets go through and the sense of seculsion or place apart really only applies to the various neighborhoods.

Default Your point?

The OP is coming from San Diego and has relatives in the SW burbs as well as a need for travel via O'Hare. I sorta like the little tone poem description of the North Shore (though I might disagree with some of it, especially in regards to valuations of late...) and won't dispute that being bounded by the Lake and the Edens does make for a bit of isolation -- those are NEGATIVES given the OP's situation.

If the OP had relatives in say southern Wisconsin and /or would not have to go through the gymnastics of getting to/from O'Hare when the Edens funnels folks toward the Loop I might be making a different recommendation.

Advantages to the North Shore are good schools and access to the lake (and Ravinia if you are a music lover). Disadvantages are it is ridiculously expensive, though $4000 a month will get you in, and not convenient to anywhere but downtown Chicago. O'Hare is a tolerable commute but, as others have noted, Midway would be difficult. The West suburbs look like the best choice.

Except that he meant buffered by the lake, not buffeted by it!

The OP didn't say where in San Diego. If he's from La Jolla then only Evanston will feel anything like home. If he's from way inland in East County, then DuPage will be fine (and cheaper and closer to the airport). San Diego is an incredibly varied area and the OP needs to be more specific for me to give anything like good advice.
