Hello! My boyfriend and I just moved to Chicago from NYC. We are staying with family right now and want to find our own place soon. I work downtown (north loop) and he's about to start a job in Elgin.

Does anyone have advice on an area to live? We'd like to live somewhere in the middle of the loop and Elgin, ideally by a metra or el train for my commute and close to an easy driving commute to Elgin for him.

We'd love to have a place with a backyard (potentially a single family home) but in walking distance to restaurants, stores, trains, etc. I'm dreaming of a town with a cute downtown area. We are planning to rent for now.

We are new to the area so appreciate any advice! Thank you!!

Definitely check out Palatine and Arlington Heights. Both have a Metra station and walkable downtown areas with entertainment. Palatine to Elgin would be about a 30 minute drive, and tack on 5-10 mins from Arlington Heights.

Itasca has a fairly nice downtown, is right between Chicago and Elgin and has a Metra stop. If your boyfriend's job happens to be close to a Metra stop in Elgin, I would definitely consider a town along the Milwaukee District West line. You both could take the train in opposite directions. I do agree that Arlington Heights and Palatine both have great downtowns, but Itasca may be more of a midway point.

That's what I was wondering?

To the OP, is the job in Elgin good?

Schaumburg is really nice, in fact, check out the tiny slice of schaumburg on Fairlane Drive. Very reasonable, safe, and right off of the elgin o'hare.

Nice for what??? Shopping?

A metra and "cute downtown to walk to restaurants" doesnt sound anything like 'Sburg unless you live by a strip mall and can walk there.
I agree with other posters, Arlington Hts downtown area is good choice.

I'd look along the Milwaukee West line.
