I'll be working in St. Charles as of August and am looking for housing. I have pets, 1 dog and 1 cat, and want to keep my commute as short as possible. I am specifically interested in the areas between Batavia and South Elgin. From my online search, I was wondering if anyone have any experience with the Brittany Court apartments in Geneva or the Shodeen management company in general? Also, any other comments will be helpful. Thanks for any comments and suggestions.

sorry, no specific information to answer your questions, but it's a great area. I hope you really like living out there. Where are you moving from?

Knitgirl,
I'm moving from the Rochester, MN area. I'm having sticker shock from the price of rentals compared to what I'm used to. I want to keep my commute short, so I'm looking from South Elgin down to Batavia. Are there other areas I should consider?

I would have expected more responses. I think you are looking in the right area. I am a big advocate of living close to work, especially when you are moving from out of the area and you don't know traffic patterns. Have you tried looking for private owners to rent from? I don't know what your price range is, this is a good price for the size I think Beautiful 2-Bedroom in 2 Flat (http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/apa/2391416087.html - broken link) Here's another one in St. Charles cute second flr duplex (http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/apa/2388714477.html - broken link)

Good luck with your move!

Thanks for the suggestions. I've posted a apt. wanted on Craig's LIst, too, but no viable responses yet. I'm more nervous about finding a place than I probably should be. I just want to know where I'm going to be living.

Don't know about Brittany Court, but I've seen Brittany Skye and Brittany Starr, oh yeah.

Im not familiar with Brittany Court, but if its like most apartments in St. Charles, theyre not very desireable, unless you look at AMLI. I would look out in Sycamore if you dont mind a 20 minute ride into St. Charles. There is a new complex they built right on the edge of town. They are cheap and pretty nice. I believe the 2 bedroom 2 bath was going for $700 a month or something like that. Google the name Prairie Stone apartments under Laing Management in Sycamore, IL. Sycamore is a small little town, but has plenty to do. Its far out from St. Charles, but not ridiculously so. I believe its about 20 miles west, but its a 55 mph speed limit out past St. Charles, so you can get from Sycamore to St. Charles in 20 minutes, no problem.

Brittany Court is listed as Geneva rather than St. Charles. Do complexes in Geneva tend to be better than St. Charles? Or are all complexes sketchy by their nature?

It does seem that a lot of the more inexpensive complexes in the Fox Valley area are on the sketchy side. I personally don't like that type of housing, and when I lived in Chicago, I lived in a vintage walk up apartment. Most of the towns along the Fox have older 2 or 3-flats managed by private owners. You would likely have access to a yard for your dog.

I would love the type of spot you describe, but I'm having a hard time finding that sort of place from a distance. Someone suggested on another thread that a way of finding that sort of place is just to drive around town looking for signs in the window. It's very frustrating, especially since I don't know the area. Thanks for all your help, though.
