I will be traveling to a Navy graduation in December and was wondering if there are areas to avoid. I understand the base is located near to Waukegan and im not famaliar with that area or any areas North of the North side of Chicago. It would be a Christmas/Grad celebration so I would like to be able to enjoy the area, and not feel like ive brought the family into a crime ridden war zone(ive done that and still living it down haha)...Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated?

Vernon Hills and Gurnee both have large malls. If you are planning to do stuff downtown, I would also book a night at a hotel downtown for a night.
Most of the hotels around the base are rather sleazy looking and in depressed areas.

Once you go west of 294, it's much nicer.

There are a couple of chain hotels located in Mettawa which isn't far from the base, one is a Hilton Garden Inn and I think there's a Holiday Inn? That area is certainly safe, you can also easily reach downtown Chicago by Metra from this area too. Nearby Vernon Hills also has a holiday light show which is kind of fun.

There is also a Homewood Suites a little further south (but still close enough) in Lincolnshire, the rooms there are more like suites, I've stayed there and it's a nice enough place.

Lots of folks stay in Mundelein and Libertyville. In fact, a lot of local residents were staying at hotels due to a major blackout the last couple days.

There a number of nice chain motels on Green Bay Road and near the Fountain Square Mall in Waukegan. Nothing fancy, but clean and safe. There are also plenty of good family restaurants nearby.

Sounds like Great Lakes Naval Base. Great Lakes is kind of a borderline. Anything due north of the base is kind of ghetto North Chicago and Waukegan and anything due south is pretty up scale Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. Gurnee is northwest and is a nice middle class community with the mall and amusement parks as other posters mentioned. Also the base has a metra stop right at it so you can stay anywhere along the Union Pacific North Line (www.metrarail.com) and have easy transportation right to it.

there are a lot of hotels in the gurnee area. you should have no problem checking out some rates etc on the travelocity, hotwire, hotels.com etc.
