My husband and I want to relocate to Gurnee. We currently live in Streeterville, but want to move to a somewhat diverse, safe, and surburban area with affordable ($200-$250K) homes and decent public schools. My husband will be working in Palatine and I will be working in Deerfield. Are these bearable commutes (under 30 mins?).

Gurnee to Deerfield, maybe if you take 94. Gurnee to Palatine, no freakin' way.

It is affordable, down to earth, and appears to be diverse. Can you recommend any other towns that mirror Gurnee, that are closer to Deerfield or Palatine?

Vernon Hills would be a very solid choice (closer to both towns for sure). I'd also put in a vote for Mundelein, although Mundelein is a little further commute than Vernon Hills.

Palatine from Gurnee? Unless you can do it outside of peak hours I wouldn't try it. True, Palatine Rd W of the Tri-State is limited stop and you would be going counterflow, but backups occur.

Compare property taxes. Reason I say this is about 10 years ago we almost moved from AH to Crystal Lake to lower our mortgage debt. But when we considered how much more property taxes were, the additional fuel costs and the life costs of longer commutes in the car when making sales calls, it was just as cost effective to stay where we currently are.
Moral of the story is it may be just as cost effective and be cheaper in "life costs" to spend $50K more on a house in Palatine. With the exception of homes located close to the large apartment complexes around Rte 53/Rand/Dundee or other large groupings of large apartment buildings, Palatine is a good safe community that offers decent schools, excellent library and parks, good convenient shopping, a charming (by suburban standards) downtown, Metra to Chicago and nearby forest preserves.

We are a multi-cultural family; Do you all think that Palatine, Vernon Hills, and Gurnee would be accepting communities?Mundelein (sp)?

Gurnee to Palatine was be a horrific commute. I agree I would look into Palatine itself or vernon hill. Both are much closer and communities I think would work for you.

When we lived in Gurnee I saw no reason it wouldn't be accepting of a multi-cultural family. My husband and I are different races and never had problems. I wouldn't exactly call the city diverse, though.
