Hi- Totally ignorant to Chicago area- forgive me- we are from Mpls
We may be facing a job move where my husband would work in Berwyn. I am looking to live in an area where my kids can have a good sized yard (they are energetic!) We don't want a huge commute- 30 minutes or less. I am concerned about safety and family friendly neighborhoods. Can spend 350-450 on house. Any nice calm suburban areas close enough?

Thanks

There are quite a few options with in your price range depending on what's more important to you. Here's a list of a few:

Riverside
Lagrange
Oak park (a little more urban, with more intergrated diversity)

You can get a lot for you budget in the western suburbs, especially in the current market.

If you'll be working at the hospital there a wide range of suburbs and some parts of Chicago that could put you within and EASY 30 minute commute based on the fact that MacNeal is right across from the Metra station...

Budget would be helpful info.

My budget for a house is 350-450. We would prefer to be in the suburbs, as I think we will get more of a yard that way. Thanks!

La Grange has nice options in that price category. It is a very short drive to Berwyn and you could also use Metra. Schools are very well liked, lots of nice parks, nice well developed central town with plenty of family friendly eating places and such:

504 S Spring Ave, LA GRANGE, IL 60525 | MLS# 07751076

115 N Peck Ave, LA GRANGE, IL 60525 | MLS# 07788181

For that price range, come over to Elmhurst. My wife and I actually originated from Berwyn, but call Elmhurst home now. It is almost straight west of Berwyn (the southern end of Elmhurst and north end of Berwyn share a common border in Roosevelt Rd). Fantastic city, vibrant downtown, huge variations in housing ages and styles and great public school district. Plus, it is the first town into DuPage County. Cook County is known for it's corruption...

Trust me, you will not be disappointed in Elmhurst.

I have to ask, have you eliminated Berwyn as a an option? Don't know where in Berwyn your husband will be working, but I'm guessing it might be MacNeal hospital. The neighborhood both north and south of the hospital/downtown area are nice. Lots of tree-lined streets with beautiful housing stock--bungalows and victorians. The schools near there (Emerson and Irving) are decent as well. He could literally walk to work.

If you're looking for a little more upscale environment and top-notch schools, I would point you to Riverside or LaGrange. There's lots of property for sale right now in Riverside. Keep in mind, you pay dearly for location in these parts. In my opinion, chicago-area people are paranoid about putting their kids in lilly-white schools, and that's why a house in Riverside one mile west of my bungalow in Berwyn costs $200K more.
