They do but you have to buy a ticket to ride them so you might as well use the CTA bus. There are several routes and they run more frequently than the commuter shuttle. The collapsible bike is a good suggestion but be sure they are as easily to collapse as advertised. Some are rather cumbersome to take apart and put together.

The OP is not saying much about his current situation. I've lived in Cleveland and it is a nice compact city. An hour and a half drive from Cleveland will almost get you to downtown Pittsburgh, with almost the whole trip being across farmland. So his current commuting situation is very odd - maybe he changed jobs but didn't move.

While cheap by world-city standards, Chicago is much, much more expensive than northeast Ohio, so a $42K job in NE Ohio would be comparable to a $60K job here. Just sayin'.
