The crime rate in Elgin is AVERAGE.Take a look at the City Data information about it, you might be surprised. I'm speaking to you, whatyousay. I wouldn't recommend that far of a commute for the OP. The part of Elgin that is that is served by the Burlington schools, is west of Randall Rd which is the kind of vinyl sided subdivision land that you can find all over.

Shelley, it's spelled Marengo. It depends on what your family is looking for. It's definitely much more rural and less suburban out there. I haven't been to Woodstock in a while, but they have a cute little town square area.

Marengo is a very rural area. the HS is about 400 students and the town is surrounded by cornfields. I'd probably guide you to the Burlington school district...the schools are good and it gets you a bit closer to Chicagoland. As someone else said, Belvidere also has good schools and it puts you close to Rockford. though Rockford is nothing like Chicagoland, it at least gives you more civilization. Stay away from living in Rockford or the Rockford school system...it's the pits. As such, I believe cherry Valley falls into the Rockford School district, so tread with care.

To the origianal poster it really boils down to what your looking for.
Are you looking for a slower paced life vs. a life living in the burbs.

If your looing for a slower lifestyle that is not a far reach from the burbs and the city than morengo may be a great place for you.

Not everyone values the hustle and bustle dont discount the morengo area until you speak to some people from the area.

Might me the best place you have ever imagined and might be exactly what your looking for.

Marengo. Sounds like a Spanish dance. Seriously, not a bad ride from Crystal Lake. Also, judging from all the construction during the boom, a lot of people thought it was a good place to live.
