I am currently in the Army and working on finishing my degree. When I get out of the Army, I will have a Bachelors degree in IT (also associates in criminal justice) and IT certifications (a+, security +, net +) and 8 years of active duty service. I am looking at the possibility to move to the Chicago are but wanted to see what people said as far as the outlook for IT job market in the area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Without experience and / or something that is going to be more compelling that just a "generic" IT degree you might want to consider someplace with a hotter job market. If you don't have any special connection to Chicago it may also be wise to consider places with a lower coast of living -- maybe Texas...

My job in the Army is an IT job, so I'll have 8 years if IT/networking experience.

If you worked with Cisco gear it makes a whole lot of sense to work on CCNA -- CCNA Routing and Switching - IT Certifications and Career Paths - Cisco Systems

I actually worked with folks that have done that path -- https://www.cool.army.mil/search/CERT_CCNA1457.htm

Good Luck!

The IT job market is quite good in the Chicago area. Unfortunately, I really want to move, but the job market is keeping me in this area (among a couple other factors).

I work in the Microsoft sector, in the Windows client/server management practice. There is tons of work to be had on the Microsoft platform: database, software (.NET) development, systems management, monitoring, etc.

Best of luck to you.

Cheers,
