I agree with this line of thought. Not only look into downtown Arlington Heights, but Mount Prospect or Des Plaines.

Des Plaines is not bad, Mt. Prospect much more limited in things to do within walking distance of downtown compared to AH and Des Plaines.

I live in Schaumburg but agree that Arlington Heights has a much better downtown especially for apartment living.

However, it depends on what your interests are and what you'll be doing in your free time. Would strongly advise you to spend more time in a few towns you like before signing a lease. There is no shortage of places to rent.

Disagree with Chet about the Metra. I took it recently for jury duty and it only made 2 stops before we got to Union Square. There was also plenty of parking available.

I dunno how you can disagree -- get on at Naperville, get off at Union Station, 34 minutes, no stops between: Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Schedule

Best for Schaumburg's out of the way MD-W line is 44 minutes with two intervening stops:
Milwaukee District / West (MD-W) Schedule

I haven't been on the forum for long, but I have noticed the people here have a really hard time staying on topic. The OP is asking for the information about Schaumburg vs. Naperville, but a lot of you here are telling him to consider somewhere else. Do you think you are really helping solve the problem?

I suggested AH based on OP saying this:
Quote:
Safety
Commute to Downtown (Driving/Metra).
Cheaper rent

I looked at Tree house of Schaumburg and really liked it for the price.
The reviews I looked at are mixed. Appreciate if someone who know this place can share some information.
The Tree House is NOT convenient to Metra. The complex itself is not bad, but is isolated from walking to do anything except eat at Culver's, Wendy's and The Alumni Club. IF OP worked at motorola then it is rocking location across the street from work.
If OP needs to drive to work AH is closer and easier drive to downtown than Naperville.
IMO there is nothing wrong with suggesting other alternates that may have advantages over what is originally considered.

I lived in both Arlington Heights and Naperville. I prefer Naperville much more. It has a much larger downtown with a lot more shops and restaurants. Plus the riverwalk is there, Centennial Beach, the fine arts center, etc. They are comparable in terms of commutes to Chicago. Express train from Naperville is 32 minutes. Arlington Heights is 33 minutes. Drive from AH is about 40 minutes to the loop. Naperville, as long as you stay North of 75th and East of Rte. 59, it's 40 minutes to the loop. I drive to the city every weekend and it takes me 40 minutes. In traffic it's longer, obviously.

Naperville is more expensive, but has held its property values better than AH, especially within a 1 mile radius of downtown.

I would never consider Schaumburg as a place to live, but Woodfield is a great mall to shop

Valid points. I still contend that driving to downtown during RUSH hours is quicker from AH than Naperville. AH has Lake Arlington and Metropolis Theater. Yes Naperville is larger downtown with more shops and restaurants and also more traffic & congestion.

Arlington Heights is definitely a quicker drive to the hip neighborhoods of Chicago's north & northwest sides compared to Naperville although both towns might be almost equidistant to the actual downtown Loop.

I can tell you as a 21 year old male naperville has growing problem with drugs and violence. I have personally had 3 friend overdose on heroin who lived in Naperville. A lot of rich kids with too much time on their hands. Even though naperville has a downtown to die for, I would pick Schaumburg.
