My husband is a US Army Recruiter & has been stationed in Oak Lawn. We are moving from out of state & are completely clueless about the area. I have 2 kids (10 & 7), so we are looking for a safe neighborhood with good schools. We own a home in TN, so we'll be looking for a rental (no more than $2000 including all utilities). We need a good size place (at least 1500sqft) that allows dogs. I know I'm asking a lot, but if you can help with any info, please do. Thanx

There are lots of nice areas outward along the SW corrridor train line but Oak Lawn is the closest to the city you should consider. Moving back away from the city from Oak Lawn along the train line I would stay out of Chicago Ridge. It isn't terrible but is kind of a buffer town. Next stop is Worth is blue/white collar mix but affordable and safe - a small area overall with its own fire/police department. They have the Worth days parade and other community events that bring the town together and are close to a lot of nice parks. Moving farther out still is Palos (Heights & Park). These towns are very nice but a bit less affordable and typically has older, more established communities. On average these homes tend to be larger than the homes in Worth and the area is beautiful - lots of hills and trees. Moving out from there is Orland which has a lot of newer homes, shopping, etc. but that may be getting too far for your husband depending on his tolerance of a commute. Best of luck.

Oak Lawn wouldn't be a bad place at all to live but if you want to look at other areas consider Oak Forest, Tinley Park, Orland Park and Palos Hills. All have good school districts and the commute to Oak Lawn would be only about 25 minutes. Those would be good areas based on your rent requirements.

Thanks for the advise. My husband actually commutes with work to Orland Park a couple times a week, so I'm glad you've given me some areas more that way. Thanks again ;o)

Oak Lawn really just doesn't have many rentals on the market right now. But thanks for the advise, & thank you for your service! We're actually PCSing from Ft Campbell... small world
