Hi
My family is looking to relocate to the Chicago area- we have 4 children ranging from high school to elementary. He will be driving to the city as he has accepted a job at Northwestern Hospital. Can someone give me some insight about the Wheaton suburb? Looks family friendly with good schools and reasonable housing. How would the commute be? Are the schools high quality? Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Husband would be better off taking train to work. LOT LESS HEADACHES. Hospital has shuttle service from various train stations and on the hospital web site I just read, it says the monthly cost of the shuttle pass is $37.00. Not sure of monthly cost of train from Wheaton to downtown Chicago is, but definitely worth every penny.

Wheaton is a great place, has good schools and housing stock, beautiful parks, good shopping and transportation. Several thousand people take the metra train (Union Pacific west line) every day to downtown chicago. many then hop shuttles or other buses to various universities and hospitals.

Honestly the drive from Wheaton to Northwestern is fairly significant. I know several physicians and nurse practioners that do drive to NU Hospitals from the western suburbs and those that are in the eastern parts of DuPage, like Elmhurst or Hinsdale/ Clarendon Hills or western Parts of Cook Co, like LaGrange/ Western Springs shave a solid 15 minutes off their drive in the morning and at least that much in the evenings...
Budget wise you ought to be able to find a VERY similar home in the closer suburbs for about the same money. Of course if your practice requires you to be in the Wheaton / Winfield area then you will need to endure the longer commute when you head to the main hospital but when you work from a suburban office you'd save time.
