My family will be moving from Orlando, FL to Chicao later this sumemr. We are looking for a nice area within a 30-40 minute commute to Elk Grove, IL. Schools are very important to us as we have a daughter entering 6th grade. We love family oriented neighborhoods with lots of children and access to parks, shopping, etc. Can anyone give us recommendations of where to begin our search?

Elk Grove Village is not particularly close to Oak Park nor are its schools performing significantly well to warrant a long commute.

Depending on one's budget and tolerance for commute there are town worth investigating to the south like Elmhurst. To the north towns like Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect have schools that perform better than those in Elk Grove Village itself.

Awww, man I see Oak Park recommended all the time in this section! I thought maybe it was automatic or something.

Seriously, though, I second the Elmhurst suggestion. I like its proximity to O'Hare and it is surrounded by highways. I travel a lot and appreciate the easy access Elmhurst has. No I do not live there but it would be on my list if I was moving.

Oak Park is over rated IMO, and has much property crime and holdups, as well as drug problems.. Park Ridge is pricey but has good schools, I think, and public library. Palatine and Arlington Hts. are very nice--that area. Near Harper community college. Elmhurst is good, nice downtown, hospital, public library and private college. These areas are not particularly "cool" suburbs. Conservative and squareish IMO. Oak Park is very liberal, politically and socially. Most of these suburbs are bedroom communities.

What is wrong with a suburb being a bedroom community?

Nothing is wrong with bedroom communities. I merely mention the fact.

Default Check Bartlett

We moved there 5 years ago and love it, lots of parks, and few very family oriented subdivisions...

Yes, but you have U-46 schools. There are better school options
