I'm sorry to hear of your situation; Waukegan truly is a dump.

Have you looked at nearby Zion and Gurnee?

Zion is worse than Waukegan. And Gurnee is bland as all hell.

Not sure about Lake County, but why not look in Glenview or Glencoe. Both would be a much easier commute for your husband. There aren't a lot of homes in your price range, but there are some.

House under $200K in Glenview or Glencoe
Maybe Skokie, Morton Grove or Niles.

Good suggestions with Skokie, MG and Niles. Much closer to Evanston and affordable homes.

If you want to stay in Lake County at that budget, I'd suggest also looking at Highwood. This is probably the most affordable of the North Shore towns, but keep in mind that it's not that big. It's sort of sandwiched in between Highland Park & Lake Forest. It will certainly shave some time off of that commute that your husband currently has from Waukegan. Metra might even be a commuting option for him (it could've been from Waukegan, but it's probably even more realistic out of Highwood).

dont blame you for wanting out of Waukegan. I wouldnt live close to Evanston either tho. Too old. Extend a little further west to Arlington Hts or Mt Prospect. You can still get to Evanston for work in under 20minutes and find a very nice home in better n'hoods for around 200k. Its worth paying a pinch more for safer, cleaner, newer, etc. and better schools

I'm not sure why the pp said Evanston is too old....I lived right by there for 4 years and there are a TON of young families in Evanston, plus, it's a University Town so there are a ton of college students as well. I would check out Evanston---the downtown is definately nicer than any other suburb except for maybe Naperville and Highland Park, which are both expensive.
