I'll be moving to the area for a job in Harvey and am looking for a great place to live that's close to work. I've made a few trips to the area in recent months and have tried to spend a little time driving around to get a feel for the area. I'm leaning towards the Tinley Park, Frankfort, Mokena area but haven't had a chance to really check out what's on the north side.

Any suggestions?

Default Money will go farther in NWI...

... and it is likely your total commute time will be better too.

I was just checking out Google maps and was wondering about that very thing. Dyer and Schereville are in driving distance and appear to be good communities based on the stats I'm finding.

Homewood and Flossmoor are great communities to also consider. Both are probably a 15-20 minute drive to Harvey. Those two would give you the shortest commute.

If you are interested in living a little further north, the Beverly neighborhood in the city is great and would be about 20-25 minutes away.

If you were leaning towards Frankfort, I would recommend you continue to give Frankfort some serious thought. The only other suburb mentioned worth seriously considering is Flossmoor. Flossmoor is a well preserved older community that is still a very nice upper middle class neighborhood. A true gem in the southern suburbs. Although flossmoor does lack in some amenities that a newly built up neighborhood like frankfort has. Frankfort is probably the best neighborhood mentioned.

Now that I've narrowed it down to a handful of areas, I'm getting pretty discouraged over rent prices. A 1 bedroom in a not so impressive building or complex is going for close to $1,000 a month or more.

Oak Forest. Easy access to Orland Park and (believe it or not) is extremely close to Harvey on 159th.

As long as there is a larger percentage of houses than normal are in foreclosure, short sale, and for sale, the rental market will be tight and expensive - especially in areas with a highly desirable address.

You would do best to stay away from the bigger complexes and look into private rentals. Homewood has a good bit of private rental units above the businesses in their downtown area. Flossmoor does as well. The complexes in Tinley, Orland, etc., are pretty expensive.

I would live in one of these:

La Grange, Orland Park, New Lenox, Frankfort, Mokena, Tinley Park, Flossmoor, Homewood, or Hammond, IN.

Like Chet said, Indiana will be cheaper so if you don't have any kids I would look into Hammond.
