I have recently spent a while in Chicago/New York, however i spent 3 months in Long Grove, i was wondering if anyone was a member of a country club, and if so which is their top 5?!

Obviously Medinah will most likely be one of the top ones nearly everyone chooses.

If the Top 5 is "PGA Quality course," then in no order I'm guessing Medinah, Cog Hill, Olympia Fields, Kemper Lakes, Butler National. All of these (except Butler - no female members) have hosted PGA events in the recent past.

Butler used to be home to the Western Open. Western Open - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It is a wonderful golf course with very limited membership.

When evaluating "country clubs" the range of services / amenities and the exclusivity of the membership is often more important than the challenge of the golf lay out.

The region is home to many very old exclusive country clubs that offer a range of tradtional sports. Beyond golf and swimming many nicer clubs offer tennis on improved clay surfaces or Wimbledon-like close moved grass, many extend the season with paddle tennis, trap/skeet, or indoor squash courts.

It would be very hard to rank the whole of clubs that offer different levels of amenities and also fairly factor in the level of challenge that their golf courses offer.

Most communities of size and substance in Chicago/Cook County have some type of private country club. Some were created in the late 1800s. The same can be said of downstate. Some clubs have reciprocal agreements regarding dining and golf. Some are open membership while some are not. Some are more private golf course club than a full service private club. And a few are very exclusive.

Good Lord, is it that you guys just want to see yourselves in print?

I gave a simple list based on course quality. If you wanted to give a list using some other criteria, you could have done that. If you weren't sure what the OP wanted, you could have asked the OP "What criteria should we use to rank the top 5? Course quality? Amenities? Exclusivity?"

Instead we get postings telling us general stuff about Country Clubs, which anyone could get from Wikipedia. No value added at all.

Do any of you golfers know which Chicagoland clubs have the strongest youth golf instructional programs? Also, any recommendations for which clubs have good caddy training program?

My 12 y.o. (currently shoots in mid 90's) wants to get into a Jr. PGA/tournament program and also start caddying this Spring. For caddying, we are specifically looking at Medinah, Kemper, and Biltmore as we have friends at these clubs, but we are open to other suggestions.

OP, hope this isn't off-topic for your thread. I can also start another thread on this...

Default Good starting point...

The folks that are involved with Illinois Junior Golf Association are a great resource -- IJGA Youth Development Programs
