My family and I are moving to Steger this month. Can anybody tell me a little about safety surrounding Steger? I'll most likely be working in Matteson, so I'll be driving either through the Heights, Park Forest, or Richton Park. Are any of these areas really rough? Which areas in the immediate vicinity of Steger would I want to avoid? My wife grew up in a small town in Florida with very little crime and very few seedy areas, so this will be pretty different for her, and frankly it's been so long since I've really been around the areas to be able to say for sure what's what. Thanks.

Yes, Ford Heights is really rough. It's comparible to some of the worst areas in Chicago. The east side of Chicago Heights isn't too much better. Sauk Village is also not a very nice place. Steger, Park Forest, Richton Park and Matteson are all fine but it's not like the northwest suburbs or small town Florida.

I told you the areas that actually have a serious crime problem. Sometimes people pass through Park Forest, Richton Park and Matteson and freak out just because they see a bunch of black people - nothing more, nothing less.

I've always viewed Steger as being a little more rough around the edges than Park Forest, Matteson or Richton Park. But I guess for some people it's fine to blast gangsta rap music in the middle of the night, sag your pants, speak in Ebonics and sell weed as long as you're white and live in Steger or South Heights.

Let's not forget that like Sauk Village and Ford Heights, Steger feeds into the cesspool known as Bloom Trail High School. Let's here it for Richton Park, Matteson and Park Forest having no part in that.

Depends where you stay in Steger, there are some nice parts and some parts that are very trailer parky like.

My advice to get to Matteson would be to take Sauk Trail, you will go through Park Forest and Richton Park, which aren't too bad of areas.

You will have a Walts in Crete and Jewel in South Chicago Heights for grocery shopping. Or you can just hop on Sauk Trail and head to Indiana for shopping.

Matteson isn't a bad area, it has a bad reputation and a dying retail establishment but crime is relatively low. You can jump on 394 to get into the city pretty quick if needed.

Where specifically are you looking in Steger? PM me if needed.

We found a place on the south end of Steger on Stella Blvd. It looks like a pretty nice area, right by a school, and I have a handful of cousins who've lived there all their lives. Any thoughts on that area of Steger?

That's a pretty nice area. Good friend of mine lives by the factories on the South Heights/Steger border. I don't think Steger is a bad town at all, lots of regular blue collar workers there, nothing wrong with that.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that. It's definitely a nice looking area. I'm looking forward to living there.
