We are locating to northern IL/Chicago suburbs and/or southern WI region. We would like an upscale neighborhood with great public schools or a not so upscale "good" neighborhood but has great private school in the area that are somewhat diverse or diversity "friendly". Any neighborhoods come to mind please advise???

Try Evanston, just north of the city. Has many different options for buying or renting and is generally an upscale place (some corners of it though are a bit shabby). Good schools, racially diverse, nice little downtown, the advantages of a nearby university (Northwestern), and an easy commute to Chicago via public transit.

Or on the South Side consider Hyde Park/Kenwood. Solid middle-class to upper middle-class neighborhood, very quiet (or just plain dull, depending on your point of view) racially diverse, tolerant, liberal, home base of the U. of Chicago. Also many different housing options from rentals to condos to multi-million dollar mansions. Schools are shaky, but there is the great Lab School (private) nearby and the K-8 public Ray school which has a very good rep. This is the area, of course, where the President has his home. Downtown is 20-30 minutes away via commuter train or express bus. No el stop in the neighborhood.

Where is job located?

If work is inside Chicago or nearby suburbs like Rosemont then a drive from Kenosha would mean nearly four hours a day in traffic...

Price point? And I think Chet's question about where you will be working is probably the most important one.

Default Probably gonna get most bang for your buck...

...in Gurnee. There was a lot building in the last two or more decades, turned farms into subdivisions. Schools in Zion and Waukegan are not as good. Those in Pleasant Praire WI are probably better, but not sure if additional costs / longer commute really make sense for everyone.

Do NOT rely on test scores to choose Evanston public schools. It looks great on the surface.

We moved here recently and were HORRIFIED by what goes on here and what other parents think is okay in a school setting. Our five year old had to start at a private school after a month of hell in the "best" public school in the district.

I didn't even cover all of the crime here. Get ready for teenagers to punch you in the face and steal your iPhone as you walk down the street.
