My family is moving to the Chicago area in the very near future from Wisconsin. We are looking to rent something simple (2 bed, 1 bath). We have a three-year-old and two golden retrievers. We will be working one day each in the following areas: Elgin, Schaumburg, Deerfield, the Loop and Vernon Hills. We would like to pay no more than $1,500 a month and value safety, quality daycare, and reasonable commute times. Seems like the dogs are the most difficult factor at this point... Any suggestions?

Two large dogs are gonna be very hard for any landlord in a multiunit situation to accept and $1500 is not enough to rent a decent townhouse or single family home. Can you find a friend to take care of the pets until you can buy a place?

I'm sure what you're looking for definitely does exist. Start combing Craigslist for dog-friendly rentals.

You'll be able to consider the city and suburbs, although over the long haul, the NW suburbs would probably be the best location for you. Elgin and the Loop are very distant from each other; you're never going to have a perfectly "reasonable" commute with that work schedule.

There are over 200 suburbs and over 70 city neighborhoods, so do your research here on City-Data about the listings you're interested in.

One option as a stop-gap measure until you find a rental: an extended stay hotel that allows dogs.

Also: I would definitely NOT recommend Northwest Indiana to you because your travels take you entirely the other direction, but my family rented a dog-friendly, nice, 2br townhouse in a 6-unit building in a pleasant area of Chesterton for about $750 per month. There are suburbs in far NW Chicagoland that should have similar price points.
