Hi All- We are looking to relocate from Wisconsin this summer and trying to figure out where to rent. I work in Waukegan, so we've been looking in Lake Co. Our budget is going to be somewhat limited because we're expecting a baby and my wife is going to be a stay at home mom for a little while - around $1200. We'll need a 2BR place and we've been looking at Condo and Townhome rentals primarily. We're both open to pretty much anywhere that fits our budget, as long as it's safe and relatively close to amenities (within 10-15 minutes). I've found some places in Wauconda, Volo, Grayslake, and the Round Lake area that appear to fit the bill. I'm probably leaning more towards Wauconda and Grayslake out of those options. I know Volo is quiet and has new housing stock, which is appealing, but it's pretty far out there. I don't know much about Round Lake at all. I have heard that there are some areas there that are not safe and we would obviously want to steer clear of those areas. What are the areas to avoid and which ones are good? What would your choice be? I see this being a 1 - 1.5 year rental until my wife returns to work and we don't know where that will be yet. This will be our first child, so we don't have to worry about the schools. We're not limiting our search to these areas, so if there are other areas you'd recommend checking out we'd love to hear them too. Thanks in advance!

I also would look at other towns too, but of the ones you mentioned I would choose Grayslake.

I would choose Grayslake as well, since property taxes won't be an issue with renting. Gurnee would also be a good choice...that would be a very short commute to work and also right in the middle of tons of shopping and restaurants.

Round Lake has some decent areas but some parts are a dump. Also, the drive to Waukegan might be longer than you would expect.
