Nobody said otherwise. My point was trailer parks are not accurate in describing the region. Heck Chicago has them within city limits anyway.

but you did trash the Hoosier state specifically with a negative stereotype while other surrounding states are just the same and NWI is a ghetto is small part only

I agree surrounding states are trashy and Illinois is no different. Middle America isn't exactly the most desirable place.

Every state has its trashy parts, that is not limited to the Midwest. But people underestimate the Midwest. Just because its not near a ocean and you have to deal with winters doesn't really justify as reasons to not live there.

As far as NW Indiana, growing up in IL, its a place most Chicagoans never desire to go to....unless you need fireworks. Me and my family never wanted to go there, but we did go to WI a lot. Lake Geneva and such was a good time. I also had a friend who lived in Merrillville, and it was nothing special IMO, very corporate. Gary, Hammond, etc don't really appeal, at least not to me. I'd rather stay in IL with the high taxes.

Yes staying in Illinois and continue getting poorer and poorer. The tab on Emanuel's series of tax hikes: $1,700 a year for average family - Chicago Tribune
Since that article was published:
Another property tax hike
Sales tax hike for Cook County
Soda tax
And the major permanent income tax hike last July.
So that addition $1,700 an average family loses from their paycheck is over $4,000 a day.
Any rational person can see the writing on the wall here.
Finally there are several very nice areas in NWI but since you haven't been there you don't know. Don't judge an entire region based off 1 town.

We found Chesterton one day after a horrendous storm on our way to the beach. We love the dunes and go a couple of times in the summer. This particular day we decided to explore Chesterton instead. Talk about Mayberry and cute. I loved it!

Most Chicago city residents that I've talked to strongly dislike NW Indiana. They say the state is backwards and leeches off of Chicago and that NW IN is run down and dumpy looking. I've only been to East Chicago and the northern part of Hammond, so I will say that those areas are dumpy looking, but I've heard areas further south and east are much nicer.

In my opinion, Indiana is a good example of how to run a state and Illinois is an example of how NOT to run a state.

NWI I is much more than its older northern industrial parts as numerous posts in this thread indicate. Those that think otherwise are obviously not familiar with the area and are going by old stereotypes and impressions

Well enjoy those high taxes as Rauner just approved another property tax hike! Illinois residents now pay the highest property taxes in the country, highest sales tax and now misc taxes such as a pop tax, just to fund the worst pension debt of all the states in the country!

And yes, every state has it's less than desirable areas! I would say Hammond, East Chicago and even Gary are better than some of the South Chicago suburbs! However, if you go just a little further South of there the area in NW Indiana is total opposite! I live in St. John and it's comparable to Orland Park. Actually, it's nicer than Orland! Lots of mature trees and deer roaming. Homes that range $300k-$1mil plus, with property taxes capped at 1% of your properties assessed value! Oh and if I so desire, I'm only 38 miles from downtown Chicago! Don't want to be that far, look at Dyer, Munster and Highland. As a matter of fact, Munster is putting in a huge shopping center (Centennial Village) and a new condo building that will have units starting at $220k for a 1bd 1 ba to over $400k for a 3 bedroom unit! Munster schools are rated a 10, BTW. There are MANY great neighborhoods in NWI!! The schools are fully funded and trust me, they are better!! My kids were in the Plainfield school district in Illinois (supposedly rated a 9) and when we moved here my kids were behind! The high school here offers WAY more STEM classes as well as way more college classes!!

It might pay for people to look beyond Gary as they look beyond Englewood in Chicago, correct? What you see from the Toll Road is not a good indication of a NWI town!
