First off love this forum. I've been reading threads on it for awhile and have gotten some great information, but figured it was time to just go ahead and ask my question directly.

I currently work and own a place down south on 55 but I've got this woman I can't live without who lives in Chicago and I'm looking for some help narrowing down my choices for a new house up north that could work for me and then be a good first home.

I already have a half an hour commute right now and it really wouldn't bother me if I had to drive as much as an hour and a half, my work hours are really accommodating, as long as I'm not that far from 55 or another interstate. She currently works downtown, and I love the idea of being able to get downtown easily for stuff to do on the weekends myself so something near a rail line would be a plus, and she also has family up on the north shore so it would be nice to be able to get up there without to much trouble.

We usually meet up mid week for dinner somewhere along the way so we've spent some time in a few of the places I've seen mentioned here frequently like Naperville, La Grange and Riverside and I like them all specifically the developed downtown areas of Naperville and La Grange but I also like the smaller town feel of Riverside. I do only have between 300-350K to spend and I'm worried in any of those places I'd be stuck with the worst house in town. If I need to be set straight on this point, If anyone could provide further insight, or if anyone had some ideas for other suburbs we could try and explore ourselves further on a Wednesday night it would be greatly appreciated.

If you are familar with Lagrange and Riverside you seem to have missed the "filling" in that sandwich -- Brookfield is right in your price range. You will not be stuck with any poor choices if you can spend $300-$350k, in fact you might be able to get something a little under your price point, do some simple updates and build "instant equity" by turning an ugly duckling into a swan!

I would also suggest Lemont and Romeoville as towns where you housing dollar will go further but you still have good access to the Stevenson.

You don't mention where in Chicago your girlfriend lives. Naperville, Romeoville and Lemont start to get a bit far.

Just follow the Metra train line towns toward Chicago. Downer's Grove, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Western Springs and east into LaGrange etc. All should have something in your price range.
