We currently live in Providence, RI. My husband has a promising job lead in Glenview. We're looking for family friendly areas to live that are 45 minutes or less of a commute from Glenview in any direction. We prefer older, charming homes and a nice village/downtown. Our housing price limit is approximately $400K Does any place like this exist? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

There are plenty of places like this near Glenview (Wilmette would be really convenient), but the problem is that Glenview is nestled in to one of the most expensive areas in the Chicago suburbs. $400K won't go very far in any of the surrounding towns that are charming, older, and family friendly. It won't go very far in Glenview itself.

Mt Prospect could meet your budget and has great schools and amenities, but it's not particularly charming. And the "downtown" is pretty lousy compared to Wilmette, Arlington Heights, Highland Park, etc.

You can find something in Glenview or Northbrook for that price as long as you aren't looking for a big house. Wilmette and Winnetka probably have the charm you are looking for, but will be more expensive.
