Chicago is large. Where in the city will he be working? In the loop? What kind of commute would he be looking for? We cannot give you general information without a few more facts.

Are you looking for a community college for your older child or a private university or public 4 year college?

What is your budget for rent?

The public schools are generally good in most suburbs though not all of them, so your 12 year old should not have a problem if you choose your suburb carefully.

Not all suburbs have good schools, in fact, some are worse than Chicago Public. If he works downtown almost any place within 20 miles, maybe 50 if you can stand it. Price range is pretty important, as well as your must-haves.
