Hi, I just recently moved to Wheeling from Indiana for a new job. Here's the situation: I am driving a toyota that is under my parent's name, and so is the insurance. I realize I need to register this car since I am a new resident of Illinois. I am concerned that there could be a problem since the car is not in my name. I am going to call the DMV tomorrow and see what they say but in the mean time, does anyone here have any advice or any idea how that situation would work out? Thank you.

I'm new to IL as well, so I don't know all the nuances of IL law yet. That being said, I highly doubt you'll be able to register the car in your name if your parents are the titled owners - even if you have the same last name. The state doesn't know if you're related or not and they're not going to assume anything. Your parents are going to need to sign the title over to you - basically the same as selling you the car, even if there's no money changing hands. You'll also owe use taxes in IL on the transaction. If your parents are just letting you use the car for a little while and this isn't a permanent situation, I'd just leave the car registered in Indiana. There's nothing illegal about that since your parents are still the owners of the vehicle and live there. If they're giving you the car, you'll probably want to have them sign the title over to you so you can register it in IL. Hope this helps!

If the car and the insurance are under your parents name you will have to register it under there name unless they transfer everything into your name.

Ok thanks. Also I'm from Indiana. Apparently the insurance from Indiana cannont transfer to Illinois. Correct? If not, can anyone recommend me some decent auto insurance that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm 22 by the way, so I realize with my age the rates will probably be a bit higher.

Thanks.
