Hi, we are moving to the area in 2008 and I am wondering are there any horse people, barns or activities anywhere in the western suburbs?

In general, the burbs are very equine friendly. There is a nice equestrian facility at Danada in Wheaton, and there are always horses on the trails at the forest preserves in Dupage County. There are many fine stables and boarding facilities throughout St. Charles, Elburn, Barrington, etc. If you need boarding or training, it can be very expensive in the suburbs - more affordable options are plentiful closer to Dekalb or beyond.

Shmoo Has A Very Good Answer
In addition to Shmoo's good thread, I will also suggest Wayne, Illinois. In my opinion, the small community of Wayne, Illinois is THE equestrian community in at least the Western Suburbs of Chicago. Never - the - less, living there will cost you a king's ransom.

I was curious about this idea as well? Does anyone else have any good advice? CAn you purchase an acre of land in ST. Charles for a equestrian property or are they always 10+acres?

Another thing to consider is if a given municipality permits horses or any other livestock. We have already stated the ones that do. But does St. Charles? Although I have traveled through St. Charles, IL an entire lifetime ( I live 9 miles from St. Charles), I don't have a feel for the regulations regarding horses, and the minimum size of land required to keep them. My guess is a ten acre minimum. But once again, visit

However, the ENTIRE Chicago Land Suburbia no longer has 'cheap' houses / land. One cannot find something 'cheap' because everyone has the same dream and has already found 'cheap' land before 'you'. I know that is not encouraging but that is the Gospel truth for the Chicago area. Before 'you' can find cheaper land near Chicago, you have to go West of Elburn, IL.

Lots of horses and horse people in western Kane County.A house is for sale in my nieghborhood now set up for horses(about an acre and a half).I'm zoned for horses but don't have one.There are at least 3 stables and a riding club within minutes from here and more all around the western part of the county.The county has Forest Preserves set up for riding.The farmland is being gobbled up but there are still alot of horses around.

Good to know. I will keep that definitely in mind about that highway.
