What are some suggestions of safe suburbs with good public schools and are reasonably commutable to Hines VAMC? We are looking to buy a single family house with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, budget of up to $650,000. We would be moving from in NJ. Thanks in advance.

There have been threads on this but your budget might be best in someplace like Riverside or River Forest. You may also look in areas like Lagrange, Elmhurst, Oak Park or Western Springs. These are all towns with well regarded schools, traditional walkable cores, good transit options into Chicago. easy drive to Hines and mostly safe streets. There are few parts of Oak Park that might not be as upscale as the other towns and your budget probably will not be large enough to buy the priciest homes in any of these towns but you should have lots of options...

Depends what you mean by commutable. I once knew a man who commuted to Hines from Lincolnshire. No, I wouldn't recommend it.

Up to 45 minutes max is what I meant by commutable.

All the towns I recommended would be under 30 minutes, some probably a third of that...
