Hello,

I am a grad student living in Memphis studying strategic communication, and I am interested in possibly moving to Chicago after graduation for work. I'd like to "test the water" so to speak by completing a summer internship in the area next summer (2014) before my final year of school. I've been visiting Chicago regularly for about 10 years now, as I have family that live in the Gurnee area. I'm most familiar with downtown and the areas surrounding Gurnee.

If I ever moved to Chicago, I would prefer to live near downtown. However, for this summer internship, I would live with my family near Gurnee. Therefore, I'd prefer an internship that was within a 30-minute drive of Gurnee. I'm assuming the largest cities in that radius would be Gurnee, Waukegan and Libertyville. It's quite possible that I'm missing some.

My background: I'm studying journalism and strategic communication. I also have experience with marketing, advertising and public relations. I'm more concerned with location rather than the type of internship. I really just want to spend a summer working in the area.

I understand that this isn't a job networking forum, but at this point I would just like to be pointed in the right direction. I'm a bit overwhelmed, because I don't know where to start looking (aside from the obvious places like LinkedIn).

Memphis has some companies that are highly regarded for their summer internship programs. Perhaps this area of Chicagoland has similar opportunities.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or advice at this point.

Look at Abbott, Discover, and some of the other companies on this list:

I recommend Indeed as a way to aggregate job postings in one place for something like this:

Communications Jobs, Employment in Gurnee, IL | Indeed.com

That said, you likely won't find much in Waukegan or Gurnee, if anything at all. Waukegan's population consists more of commuters, and the jobs in Gurnee are pretty much centered around the mall and Great America. That said, the tollway obviously runs right through Gurnee and there will be plenty of opportunities for you by looking at the suburbs down I-94 and I-294.

Libertyville and Lincolnshire are close by and do have larger companies, but generally the closer you get to Chicago, the more opportunities there are. If you're willing to stretch that commute to 45 minutes, I actually think the city of Schaumburg would be a perfect place for you to look. There are plenty of big-name companies with corporate offices in Schaumburg and I'm sure there would be some communications/marketing work available there.

In addition to the HUGE world headquarters of Abbott Labs adjacent to Waukegan there are also opportunities for internships at firms like JST which makes electronic connectors, PEER Bearing, Deublin which manufacturers hydraulic couplings, LPI / TecNOVA which does contract electronics design / assembly for defense and medical products firms, as well as firms like National Gypsum and AB Speciality Silicone which make specialty products for many different firms...
