New job at Sears, Hoffman Estates, IL. but we know nothing about Chicago. We would appreciate any advice on good areas near Sears to rent an apartment or house now and to buy a home later. Also, any other advice that would be helpful. Thanks, Gail

Without knowing what your price is, this is very hard to answer. There are apts/condo rentals in Hoffman Estates. There are also burbs like Streamwood, Schaumburg, Barrington, that surround Hoff.E. I would stay away from Elgin. But your price range is a determining factor.

Hello

My husband just started a job at Sears Corporate and we are relocating from Ohio. We decided to rent a townhome in Hoffman for the next 9 months until we get a feel for the different areas. We also have a 3 year old so we will need to consider school systems as well. We will be using the Sears preschool for the next 1.5 years, so we do want to be somewhat close to HE. From what I can tell there are lots of nice suburbs around there. My husband is currently there now and we are coming out in 2 weeks, I went there last week and really liked the area. Good Luck.

Excellent idea. More people who make a move like that should rent and get to know the areas. It surprises me how many buy when they really dont know whats "home" for them yet.

Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg are pretty decent. Id look into Bartlett and Wayne too, but I would need to know how much dinero youre willing to pony up for a house. Steer clear of Streamwood and Elgin. While they have nice spots, most of the town is old and run down.

Looking at a map of the area [I90 and Beverly Rd]
West Dundee is pretty nice, I wouldn't venture into East Dundee, though my brother lives there - I've just heard better things about west.

Parts of Streamwood is nice, and parts i would totally avoid ... i think the farther north you are the better. Schools are not good, though you have not mentioned children.

Palatine, Lake of the Hills, and Arlington Hts -- though A.H. is going a bit east.

I'd thing Wayne would be a far commute, and i was not even aware they had apartments or rentals .... it's more custom homes with large lots and very large price tags .... at least the last time i drove thru there.

aslo, staying north of I90, Algonquin would be nice and stay away from Carpentersville.

HTH

Not to hijack the OP"s Thread, but we're heading possibly heading up that way too, Hoffman Estates/Sears.

Will probably rent first also, want to stay around $1200-$1500, and when we buy probably around 250,000-300,000.

Would like to avoid a real long commute like over an hour. Used to live in LA so I'm used to that sort of traffic and 45min commute is about my tops. Recently relocated back to U.S. from South China, so we're used to high density, but we wouldn't mind eventually a house we could plant a garden.

Looking at Crystal Lake, Woodstock, up in that area, are we on the right track? Not overly concerned about school district except on how it would affect resale.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Bob
