Hi,

My husband is relocating with his job to Oak Brook. We currently live in a family friendly, huge stay at home mom suburb. We are looking for similar. We have 3 boys (12,10,8) and we currently homeschool and my son is current playing elite/select baseball so we are looking for a good fit in a city that is somewhere with what fits our kiddos needs as well as not too far of a commute. (Also not to pretentious neighborhood, leaving that cookie cutter environment here and would love to have something different)

Any suggestions? Our price range is 350-450K (4B/2B min) and wow, taxes are all over the map

Thanks for any tips as we narrow down our search. Homer Glen appealed to us but seems taxes and water bills are big?

Homeschooling is more common in some of the fringe areas further away from the desirable towns with top rated schools. I mention this mostly because of your desire to have a short commute which ought to be weighed against a desire for moderately priced home...

Really most of the towns nearest Oak Brook have nearly no "cookie cutter" characteristics so that won't be a factor, what you will need to consider is if you'll compromise first on commute or house size-- towns further away like Plainfield or Oswego will see your housing dollar go further than towns like Downers Grove or Elmhurst. Towns to the east like Brookfield or Countryside are nice options if you want an older home at a better price. If you are seriously considering homeschooling through high school or using private schools towns like Westchester or Hillside might be an option...

My husbands commute now is 20 miles and 1 hour each direction (back roads) so for us that is normal and what we expect, how does that compare to the chicago suburbs? ~ we still would love to be in top rated schools (we currently live in the #1 school distict in WA state and even so homeschooling is quite popular here and looks to be the same in IL) for resale value/time on market of our home, in the event that in 4 to 5 years we are having to return to Seattle or another corporate region.

We live in a very tight knit, family orientated community now and would love to find the same. BUT our kids are older now, we moved into this community when they were babies, so a suburb with very young familes might not be the best fit. I know driving the neighborhoods is best but trying to narrow it down. We are so lucky to live on a culdesac now and all our kids grew up together, I know it will be hard to replicate but we are very excited to try
