We will be moving to the area in May, probably in the Orlannd Park, Palos Heights or Tinley Park area. Also, we will NOT need to daily commute into the City... I don't think. My question is how safe is the SWS and the RI Metra Lines to take into the City with my kids? Are there certain times or days that may not be as safe? I think these lines go through some pretty rough areas but I am not sure and I just want to be smart and educated. Thanks!

All trains are staffed with multiple conductors. You're probably safer on a Metra train than in your own home.

I wouldn't worry. As OakParkDude said, Metra trains are staffed and I've never felt unsafe on one, regardless of the line. I think I've used all of them except the Metra Electric at this point.

I suppose the Rock is the most dangerous. Someone was actually killed because the engineer exceeded a speed limit. But generally both are very safe.

You will get some shady people later at night on the RI but safe as far as I've seen.

Just to clarify, this incident had nothing to do with crime and more to do with negligence on that engineer's part. It was essentially a rail accident that caused someone to lose their life (extremely unnecessary).

The passenger was just as dead. And another engineer made the same mistake at the same place earlier. Nobody was hurt, but hopefully Metra revised procedures.

I ride the Burlington Northern line, and the only problems I've seen have involved drunken commuters hassling other passengers for who knows what imagined slight, and drunken commuters getting into it with a conductor. They sell alcohol at a couple of kiosks in the station, and some riders stock up for the trip.

Other than the occasional drunk, the guy who's too cheap to buy $10 headphones for his $200 smart phone, and the coughers and sneezers who choose to ride and infect fellow passengers rather than staying home, riding Metra beats the heck out of driving into the city and parking. I enjoy my morning and evening rides.

People so overcautious these days..

If your not getting off in any of the "rough" areas then why be concerned? The only stops in "rough" areas are Ausburn-Gresham(Rock Island) and Wrightwood(SWS) and I doubt you getting off at those stations

Metra has plenty of police and staff aboard and at the stations..You'll be fine
