When we think of airports we mostly think O'Hare, Midway, or Milwaukee-Mitchell. Maybe Rockford. Then there are the General Aviation airports (Waukegan, DuPage, Chicago Executive, Schaumburg) that few pay attention to. But there used to be a lot more. Chicagoland in Lincolnshire, Sky Harbor in Northbrook, Elgin Municipal for example. Even Elmhurst and Elk Grove, in the shadow of O'Hare, used to have one. I read there was one in Morton Grove,I can't imagine where. Considering that most people hadn't been on an airplane before the 1970's, it is amazing there were so may airports.

Interesting link. Lots of information. However I still couldn't find the airport that supposedly used to exist in Morton Grove.

I believe there was an airport around 1st Ave and Roosevelt maybe across from where Loyola Hospital is today. It was back in the early 1900s and Lindburgh used to fly the U.S. Mail out of there.

I remember seeing an aerial view of the area a few years ago and you could still see parts of the old runways. I don't remember the name of the airport though.

There is (or was about 8 years ago when I last rode over that path in the Forest Preserve) a stone marker noting the history of the area -- the Lindberg thing is myth, closed while he was still a kid.

Checkerboard Field, Maywood

I think the Forest Preserve still allows R/C planes at the field.
