We are looking at relocating to IL, with one working in downtown Chicago, and the other working in North Chicago area. Any suggestions on where to live?

Priorities:
1) Schools
2) Commute

We like to skate, swim, ride horses, outdoors stuff. We have young children (elementary school).

Would love some suggestions. (We were looking at Lake Forest, Highland Park...) but are not at all familiar with the area.

Sure, but have a viable public transit option to just driving!

Lake Forest is everything you read it is online. Very wealthy, great schools etc. If you can afford to live there comfortably, I'd deal with commute easily.

What do you mean when you say "downtown ( Rush Street)" ?

If you mean working in the Rush Street area, you are likely looking at a 2 hour +/- door to door commute on public transportation, from Lake Forest, each way:

Drive to station
Locate parking at station
Metra to Chicago
Exiting train/station
Wait for bus
Bus ride to Michigan Ave.
Walk to office building
Elevator to Office
Take a nap

Driving will reduce the commute time.

Would it really? Get a parking pass, usually issued quarterly, drive to station a few minutes before the express, ride downtown and often the bus is right there. And you can put the time on the train to use.
