Might be buying a (cheap) house, likely on very short notice.

Rural enough to keep me sane (yard is required), cheap enough to keep me happy, little to no traffic on the I88 corridor so commute looks good to naperville. That's what I have so far. Because im poor and cant afford to live in Naperville i'm forced to go further west. Which is funny, since I never thought of myself as poor before I got relocated to that bloody area.

Absolutely don't care about schools, public transit, entertainment.

I care about property taxes,
availability and quality of communication services (internet),

reliability of the power grid (lived in a place where it would cut out every time it rained, never again lol),

crime (property and violent),

quality of government services (clerks, courts, dmv, other county depts.),

road accessibility 24/7 365 (because you know, snow, and if I have to be out at 3am it has to happen).

Is how I feel right now. Cannot even make a coherent post. Ask for clarifications and thanks

Rochelle to Naperville is too far for everyday commute. Sycamore is near DeKalb and that is going to be 45-60 minutes each way. Sure you really want to go that far??

That and if your job situation changes you will have a hard time because the commute from Sycamore to Chicago is like 1.5 hours each way, probably more in traffic. Nothing against Sycamore but if I were you, I'd look at near west suburbs right off I-290/I-88, or better yet along the BNSF Metra line where you can commute to both Naperville and the Loop with relative ease.

Have you looked at Yorkville, Montgomery, Oswego, or even south like Bolingbrook or Plainfield? Even places like Sugar Grove would be closer than Rochelle/Sycamore. My husband worked in Sycamore when we first moved to Naperville and it is an hour drive....and that was on the reverse commute.

BTW...what is the housing budget? What do you mean by "cheap"?

have not but I figure anything near aurora will be up there? will certainly check these out.

150k I would say. but property taxes are an issue and yard space and separation from neighbors important (no townhomes, row homes etc). already have other housing loans in fl and ga so im trying to get this as cheap as possible.

ideally I would rent, but nothing is available and what is, has irreconcilable issues with pets. that's why renting on the whole doesn't work for us, which is why we end up buying a house everywhere we are sent. what a nightmare il is turning to be in that regard though.

I don't mind commute in terms of distance. as long as I can avoid traffic, i'm ok. I did the i88 run to test it out for a few days, and it was ok. never had an issue until 290, but since i'm not going on 290, it doesn't affect me.

i'm on alternating shifts and on call, so maybe once a week ill be driving during rush hour when those happen to coincide.

Ideally no, but do I really have a choice?

ps. north naper, right near Diehl/ogden rd. don't have to go into the core city itself. highway 35 should be done by the end of the year and that's right on my exit. so that helps vs having to go to the south of it which will add 20 minutes

290 split to harlem ave has taken me 40 minutes..... 290 is evil! im not depending on it lol

I've noticed that in Chicago distance doesn't always correlate to time spent.

Sounds about right. So from that split area to downtown proper is going to be about an hour to an hour and fifteen during rush hour. Add that onto the hour from Sycamore it'll take you to get to that point plus the commute back home and my guess is you'll be completely bat**** crazy in about 2 months should, God forbid, you ever have to take a job in the Loop to support yourself. But you have to do what you feel you have to do.

Yes you have a choice. It's a compromise on commute times or on house type/size and yard size. You seem more willing to slog through long commutes instead of compromise on house and size of lot.

I never understood why people live in a place they are not happy. That's not me.
