I will be a grad student at NIU, in computer science, from Fall 14. I have a bachelor of technology in electronics and communications engineering and I am also an avid reader. I have 3 years of experience of working in 2 MNCs and also in training software project teams. So I am good with Math, science and English. love teaching and tutoring and have some years of experience in tutoring middle school and high school kids.(I paid for my UG by tutoring). I also have over 92 percentage on my GRE (that was by taking the exam without much prep, as my situation demanded..long story). I also later worked part time at a GRE coaching institute and pretty much know how to ace the test.

So I wanna offer tutoring services in Math science and English and for GRE prep in Dekalb, so that I can help cover costs and also do what I love. Is that a good Idea? If so, in which areas and how should I look for potential students?
How much should I charge?(is 25$/hr a good charge?)
I wouldnt have a car and a bicycle, bus n walking are my sources of commute...

The CS department employs tutors and they are "free" to students enrolled in classes at NIU, that may limit your client base to folks that are more desperate.

Lack of transportation could hurt your earnings potential (most folks will probably ne more comfortable meeting in a semi-public space like a cafeteria) and you rate seems considerably lower than what other charging, but otherwise seems like a a way to make some money...

Good old fashioned signs in the buildings where students are likely to get the results of their poor performance after a test is a great strategy for finding clients. Online "advertising" / referal is probably most effective for people that plan ahead, which is a small subset of students...

I think there could be some way to tutor kids. I had a friend who gave piano lessons in her condo. She was not in De Kalb. I think the principle problem is your lack of transportation. De Kalb is not the easiest place to get around on foot or by bike in the dead of winter. Most of the Kumon Centers are farther east and not in De Kalb. Your best bet may be to tutor college students having trouble in certain course and not kids. I do know that a lot of people have trouble with math and organic chemistry...stuff like that. Nurses and people wanting to be doctors or dentists have to take this and sometimes this is their weak spot.
