I can't recall if I asked this, but it is an important factor for where I move. How long is 'winter' in the chicago suburbs? How may weeks/months of snow to shovel, ice to slip on, ice to chop off one's steps and sidewalk, scraping snow and ice off one's car windshield? I know the Chicago area has winter, just want to compare the length to where i live which has six months of snow and ice. So temping to move to a climate with no snow and ice, but I do very much like the midwest for homes, autumn leaves, seasons.

On average three months. Mid Dec - Mid March for any real worries of ice, snow, shoveling, etc.

Where are you coming from? If you think anything below 50 degrees is "winter", then it will feel a lot longer than three months.

First accumulating snow was on November 11. It was the third snowiest and third coldest winter on record. The previous winter was short and mild.

I thought this past winter was the coldest and snowiest on record.

Average Weather for Chicago, IL - Temperature and Precipitation

Note that winter varies a lot on how much snow we get. I have seen winters with NO snow and winters with a lot of snow. I was in Evanston for three of the *big* snows (1967 - 23 inches in 24 hours and 1979 and 1999). I missed the 2011 one because I moved.

The 10 Worst Snowstorms In Chicago « CBS Chicago

edit to say: I was in Rogers Park for the 1967 storm. Our car was buried for several days. In 1979, our car was in the garage which the city of Evanston graciously blocked when they plowed up our alley and left all the snow right in front of our garage doors. They had to come and dig it out after we complained and they have since learned to have the plows go around the corner there going down the alley instead of up the hill.

I'm sure if there was an algorithm to combine snowiest and coldest, last winter would have won hands down.

Technically, though, it was third in each of the categories. The Four Worst Winters Ever In Chicago « CBS Chicago
Quote:
The 67.4 inches of snow makes this the third-highest snowfall for meteorological winter (December-February) Only 1978 (71.2) and 1979 (80.6) had more snow.
The National Weather Service also totals “seasonal snow,” which is measured between July 1 of the previous year to the end of June of the current year. By that measure, this season so far ranks No. 4 with 75.2 inches. (No. 3 is 77).
It was also the third coldest winter in history. The average temperature was 18.8 degrees between December and February, a few tenths of a degree behind 1978-79 (18.4) and 1903-04 (18.3).

How long can winter seem? Long enough for someone to get so absolutely sick and tired of the grey and cold and dirty snow that he/she is heading toward depression ... then spring comes, and by end of summer you've forgotten how unpleasant winter can be around here.

You learn to layer ... on the worst days, I wear a winter coat, insulated boots, long underwear, a sweater, winter gloves and glove liners, a hat and a hat liner. When it's really bad, I have a supply of glove warmer packs to keep the fingers warm. And for the ice, a pair of Yaktrax to keep me from slipping.

But I also see plenty of people out on the coldest days without hats or gloves and sometimes even walking around in shorts. I'm 67 years old, and am on medications that make it increasingly difficult to take the cold. It's all relative, and tolerance for extremes is a personal thing. If you're coming from a colder climate you'll probably find winter around here easy to take.

You have to wear some kind of coat from May through April. Like previous posts say, the actual hard core part of winter is December through February but there can be snow and cold in November, and April and May but there will be some pleasant weather in those months too. First snowfall is usually around Thanksgiving but last year came earlier.
