Came from MN to Portland OR but after a few months here we have decided to leave (expensive-- early termination of lease, movers, sigh) and return to the midwest, this time to the Elgin/St.Charles area of IL just west of Chicago.

Any tips on areas to avoid for leasing a house over the next year? On zillow their seem to be nice looking homes in South Elgin, and of course St Charles (more expensive to rent than Elgin). I just do not want to get into any dangerous or heavy crime areas, I want to feel safe. Budget will be $1600/m or so, if needed could go to $1800 but prefer $1600 or less, for a 2-3 bedroom (preferably 3 bedroom especially is no storage although I hope to get a place with a garage. I want to stay north of Geneva because my companion she wants to attend Elgin community college so we need to live in that school district for 30 days so she can get resident tuition.

I would say northwestern St. Charles/South Elgin. Both are super close to ECC.

Crime really isn't an issue in St. Charles or South Elgin. I would probably avoid any large apartment complexes and try to rent from an individual landlord though. Large complexes tend to have a more transient population in general and tend to have more quality of life issues (noise, for example). Other than that, I don't think you can go too wrong.
