Arlington Heights is a great area for families. There's a decent downtown and excellent schools. However, all of Arlington Heights' middle schools don't have all of their students moving on to the same high school. They could go to the John Hersey HS (Arlington Heights), Rolling Meadows HS, Prospect HS (Mt. Prospect), A small portion goes to Buffalo Grove HS, and a small portion goes to Wheeling HS. Arlington Heights is more on the expensive end for homes. What's your price range for a home? Where will you be commuting to and from?

Price range not more than $250.000.
Commuting doesn't matter as of now, because I work in different suburbs and city.
I make around $75.000 per year. My wife is babysitting our 9 months old, but will be back to work in year or couple, so totally well be making $100.000 plus. Is this city for our family or should we look for something cheaper? And how about other cities in the area: Palatine, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights?

All of the towns you mentioned are nice, but you'll only be able to get a condo or townhome or a 1500 sq ft single family home in AH or the other towns. Since, your wife will be working again soon, you'll make more money and then you can buy a bigger house. So, you can buy a condo/townhome or a small home first and then buy a bigger home in a few years or you could look at cheaper suburbs.

1500 sq. feet are ok for us. Thank you for all your replies! I'm just thinking where can I get more square feet: Palatine, AH, Prospect Heights. ..?

Don't know if you've looked at the City-Data pages for these towns, but you can find them here:

You'll get more bang for your buck in Palatine and Prospect Heights than in Arlington Heights and Mt. Prospect.

Rolling meadows could also be a choice. Some areas feed into Arlington Heights schools, plus it is the next town over.

I agree. Rolling Meadows is also a good option. You can get even more bang for your buck there than in Palatine and Prospect Heights.
