Hey everyone, we are moving to Chicago this summer and because of my husband's job we need to rent, not buy. He will be working downtown near Millenium Park and we are looking for a fun, walking lifestyle neighborhood. We have two kids and two dogs so need good schools and a bit of a yard for dogs to run around in. We need to stay under $4k per month. Suggestions on best suburbs to look at? I would love Evanston but not sure if we'll be able to afford much there. Hubby would like less than half hour commute and the rest of us want to easily get into the city to explore and get the most of our time there. We can't afford private schools either...

If you want something more affordable than Evanston that is still any easy commute to the Loop / Millenium Park you should focus on towns with good train service: Downers Grove has BNSF expresses right at half an hour, Brookfield has regular service as quick. Elmhurst is on the UP-W line and has nearly as speedy options. Each of those towns has very well regarded schools and a wide range of rentals.

The most costly units are those in the best location / condition -- each of these towns has some nice dining / entertainment in their central core with more affordable options farther away. Newer developments are similarly quite pricey while older units are well below the limit you've indicated.

He's not going to get a 30 minute commute to the Millennium Park area living in any suburb unless he's talking about just time on the train. Add at least 10 - 15 minutes on each end of that for house to station and station to work.

Yes, I figured that.. He has an hour commute here in NoVa so total 45 minutes or less would be great. We also don't want it to take an hour to get into the city on the weekend as we really want to make the most of our time there. I would love to live downtown but not so sure about the schools.
