Growing up we used to visit The Plush Horse all the time! I revisited last Summer while on vacation. It hadn't changed. Great icecream!! My family lived down the street from Plush Horse in those wooded lots of PP. It is a BEAUTIFUL area!

Thank you all for your response.

By easy commute, I mean about 30 to 45 mins into Chicago. We are looking to spend about $500,000.

Thanks for all the input.

The Plush Horse..... fabulous ice cream parlor. We got there alot in the summer months. If you look into the Palos area, very large, but expensive homes in an area called Westgate Valley of Palos Heights, but I wouldn't say the lots are huge....

I would suggest a home in Homewood or Flossmoor. I live in Homewood and we are only a 35 minute train ride downtown. Homewood/Flossmoor has one of the best High Schools in the area. We are located in the south suburbs of Chicago. Our area has a very low crime rate. We moved to Homewood for the excellent public school district, excellent park district and libraries.

For 500K you can get a heck of a lot more home and land in Flossmoor and Homewood than you could in any of those overpriced Northern and Western Suburbs of Chicago.

Beecher will be a long commute... being 35 miles south of Chicago.
I personally do not know anything about it... so i added that link.

Check out Arlington Hts,great town, community, schools, very desirable area so your dollar investments would be worth while, easy commute to the airport or downtown Chicago. Elmhurst, Lombard,Downers Grove, Wheaton,Glen ellyn for the same reasons, ( Elmhurst-Wheaton-Glen Ellyn, are more expensive ,usually, but now there are good buys to be had ). You will have more options in this market so I would follow the desirability of the towns, (schools, surrounding areas, good resale, easy metra commute to the city)Further out, but still with a metra train to the city would be Cary/Crystal lake area though your commute is farther then your desire. St Charles/Geneva are excellent areas, wonderful towns, schools, ALOT of interest/desire for these towns, but you may be limited in your price range. Personally I would not choose the south side areas or Indiana (simply personal opinion-no offense to those who choose to live there) I hope you will visit and see what 'fits' for you and your family. Good luck.

I just re read your op and saw your request for land/space/big house. You are very limited in that price range and your commute time desire. For instance, Barrington has wonderful land/big houses but you will very limited in choices for your price. You may have to go further out from the city.

Take a look at Riverside. Large lots, large older trees, and the Metra station is within walking distance of the entire village. It's a 20 minute ride to Union Station. There's quite a diversity of housing in Riverside and $500,000 would be good for a very solid 3 bedroom house. Good luck with your move.
